Review: Throne of the Crescent Moon

Throne of the Crescent Moon Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This Arabic-inflected sword-and-sorcery adventure was good fun. It was particularly interesting to enter a fully realized Ali Baba setting rather than the usual European Medieval flavor. The writing is all clean and exciting, with good point-of-view work, and strongly visual descriptions. The characters were nicely individuated, with clear desires and problems and personalities and physicalities. The villains and danger were expressed well, and were scary enough. Really, except for a rather poky and repetitive second act, in which the subplots are pretty muddy and small, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fantasy novel, and I was engaged more than I've been by anything in the genre for a long time.
