Review: The Heart Goes Last

The Heart Goes Last The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Not an unpleasant book, but perhaps one of my least favorite of all the Atwood novels. There's just not that much to it of interest or depth. I'm not sure why Atwood writes her dopey characters so much stupider and shallower than herself; it really adds a tone of condescension to the characterizations of people we should come to care about. Are Stan and Charmaine meant to be mocked? It doesn't make for an appealing read.

Other supporting characters, particularly Jocelyn and Aurora, are so poorly visualized and delineated that they're seemingly interchangeable.

The entire enterprise reads smoothly but seems vague and empty and bland.
