Review: One Man Guy

One Man Guy
One Man Guy by Michael Barakiva

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This adorable gay romance is somewhat overwritten in the starting chapter, but settles into a nice, familiar romantic rhythm. The story is perhaps too pleasant and easy and light, even with the main character's cranky 14-year-old voice and Armenian spiciness, but it was pleasurable and heartwarming. The novel falls on the young side of the YA spectrum, more older middle-grade. It's really a preteen "kissing book" rather than a true YA romance, and I admire it for tackling an underserved age group. Its themes ultimately manage to walk a fine line between the necessary appeal of rebellion and the responsibilities of doing the right thing. Sweet.
