I Hope That Something Better Comes Along

It's not easy being Gene.
This song came up on my computer jukebox while I was writing a different post and I got up and danced with my cats and sang along and I realized all the various reasons why I have loved this song ever since the movie came out back in 1979 when I was 9 or 10. Written by Kenny Ascher and Paul Williams, it's a catchy cabaret tune first of all, with lots of witty wordplay and some nifty piano work. My favorite part of it is that it's such an adult song, touching on difficult, complex grown-up themes, both sad and funny, written for a children's movie. Using animal metaphors, it uses a bunch of different euphemisms for sex, my favorite of which is:

Still, it's fun when they're fetching,
And agree to see an etching
That you keep at your lily pad.

It's crazy how many concepts and beliefs I have about romantic love are summed up in this silly little ditty.

A skunk was badgered -- the results were strong!
I hope that something better comes along.

Plus Jim Henson performed the voices of Kermit AND Rowlf, so he's singing a duet with himself. Awesome.

We grin and bear it 'cause the nights are long.
I hope that somethin' better comes along.

Yes, such a great song! God, the Muppets (in their original incarnations) were just incredible, weren't they? Jim Henon was talent personified.

I love the line:

"She made a monkey out of old King Kong"
